BMJ highlights value of different types of research

1 October 2009

The British Medical Journal ran an editorial last month on the value of different types of research in medicine. The need to take into account a variety of research methods to suit the complexities of everyday medical practice was stressed.

Professor David Peters and his co-authors, Dr Hugh MacPherson and Dr Catherine Zollman say that there is often insufficient research evidence available to support every day treatment decisions, particularly where integrated medicine and complementary therapies are involved. Yet these approaches may prove to be particularly relevant in treating chronic diseases, which account for 78% of NHS costs.
