How did you start your journey in Homeopathy practice?

I trained in medical acupuncture at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital in the 1980's and became interested in homeopathy. I qualified as a lay homeopath in 1990 and opened a private holistic medicine practice alongside my work as a GP. After passing the LFHom I took the MFHom exam in 2002. I then worked with Dr Tom Whitmarsh in Glasgow and gained specialist accreditation in 2004 with my dissertation on Heuristics and Bias in Homeopathy. This became the basis for Prescribing Methods, one of several of my medical books. I now fit my small holistic practice around my writing and medical journalism.

How do you integrate Homeopathy in your professional practice?

I started out in psychiatry before becoming a GP. I had learned hypnosis and took this into my practice. The case-taking in psychiatry proved very useful when I started to practice homeopathy. When I opened my holistic practice I was able to offer homeopathy, acupuncture and hypnotherapy.

My dissertation on Heuristics and Bias looked at the unconscious mental short-cuts (heuristics as opposed to algorithms) that we use in arriving at a treatment. With experience all doctors are aware that they develop a sixth sense with some cases. I believe that intuition in medicine is important. In the 1990's I therefore trained in psionic medicine and incorporated it into my homeopathic practice.

I closed my holistic practice when the Covid pandemic arrived and spent time vaccinating. Now, having moved to a different part of the country, I devote more time to writing but continue to treat a small number of patients homeopathically.
